Methyl paraben, also known as hydroxyphenyl methyl ester, was initially used as a food preservative in cosmetics through a series of exploratory studies. Hydroxybenzene methyl ester has strong antibacterial effects, among which the most prominent is its antibacterial ability against mold and yeast. However, it has poor effects on some bacteria (Gram negative bacteria, lactic acid bacteria), so it is often used in combination with other preservatives in cosmetics.
